A used car warranty protects the driver against any faults that occur to the car's mechanical or electrical parts.

If something goes wrong, the driver won't have to pay the cost of repair, replacement, and labour costs.

If you lease a used car through Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, you will be offered six months free warranty.

You can also choose to extend your warranty up to a maximum 36 months (including any 'free' period) for a fixed cost.

• Gradual deterioration of the battery
• Any issues caused by negligence or misuse, common areas include the charging port
• Vehicles with leased batteries

Yes, you can extend your used car warranty by either 24 months or 36 months.

The main benefit of having a used car warranty is that you can have peace of mind that if anything goes wrong, you will be covered by your warranty.

Other benefits include:

• Replacement vehicle provided for up to seven days
• Overnight accommodation and rail fares covered up to £75 if the car breaks down and you cannot return
• Warranty is valid for 60 days a year abroad driving in the EU or EFTA

The most obvious disadvantage to a used car warranty is that it doesn't cover all faults with the car, so you might end up paying out anyway.

Also, paying for your repairs when they happen might cost less than a warranty.

Yes, you can cancel an extended warranty.

If you find that the warranty doesn't meet your needs, you can cancel within 30 days.

If you cancel after these 30 days, you'll have to pay a cancellation fee of £20.

Without a used car warranty, it's your responsibility to pay for any repair costs and ensure that the car stays in good condition for the duration of your lease.

When returning your car, you'll have to pay any damages that fall outside of fair wear and tear, so make sure you keep on top of the condition of your car.

If you intend to make a claim, you must call your warranty administrator and report the claim as soon as possible.

Make sure you don't put off making a claim, as this could lead to consequential damage, which may not be covered.

Take your vehicle to a reputable garage and get them to contact your warranty provider with the following information:

• Your warranty number, shown on the validation certificate
• Your vehicle registration number
• The date the part failed and the vehicle's mileage at the time
• A detailed estimate of the repair costs

Check if the manufacturer's warranty still applies. Most new cars come with a three-year warranty with varying mileage, whilst some more generous manufacturers, such as Kia, offer a seven-year warranty.

Yes, you can choose the garage. You'll need to ensure that the garage in question follows your policy claims procedures, which you can find in your policy document.

However, it is recommended that you get your vehicle repaired at the dealership that supplied it or another repairer. This will allow them to settle the cost of your repairs direct and will take less time.

Once your claim has been authorised, the chosen dealer/garage will help you arrange a replacement vehicle. This can be up to a mid-sized saloon for seven days.

If faults show up when you're driving outside the UK, the following conditions apply:

• The repairs must be carried out in an EU or European Free Trade Association member country
• The administrator will not pay more than the equivalent UK rate for labour charges and manufacturer price lists for the cost of repairs
• You should authorise the repair work yourself and claim back the cost when you return to the UK
• Once the administrator has received the invoice, they will repay you in sterling at the exchange rate at the time of the repair

Refunds are not available on warranties included as part of the used car lease deal as the customer has not paid for the product. 

For extended warranties in which the customer has paid for the product, you will qualify for a refund if you haven't made a claim in the last 30 days, or the warranty has been transferred to you.

If you qualify for a refund and have paid all your instalments, it will be calculated based on the number of whole months of cover remaining on the policy.

If you still have outstanding payments, the same applies plus the following:

If the refund is more than the instalments owed, the insurer will pay you the outstanding instalments to the warranty administrator and pay you the difference

If the refund is less than the outstanding payments, the refund will be used as part of your payment. You'll continue to be responsible for the outstanding payments until the balance is settled.

Please allow up to 28 days for your cancellation and refund to be processed.

No, used car warranty does not cover your vehicle's service.

You must adhere to the manufacturer's service schedule or maintain the car as recommended. Keep your service receipts, as they may be used to validate any claims you make.
