The Mini Hatchback 3 Door is now made by BMW, but it still remains true to its British roots. A small hatchback that's great to drive and has a fantastic design, the Hatchback 3 Door is a great choice for young drivers or small families.
Rivals to the Hatchback 3 Door include the Volkswagen Polo, Seat Ibiza, Audi A1 Sportback, Fiat 500, Vauxhall Corsa, and Ford Fiesta Hatchback.
Our Mini Hatchback 3 Door review covers:
The exterior design of the Mini Hatchback 3 Door is one of those things that I hope will stand the test of time. It looks brilliant with its low front grille, round headlamps, and Union Jack rear brake lights.
Interior space inside the Hatchback 3 Door is pretty generous for a city car. We'd say that the front is one of the most spacious around, with ample head and legroom for a pair of six-footers. There's no denying that rear space is tight, and two adults will feel a bit claustrophobic. If you plan on carrying rear passengers, we'd recommend the Hatchback 5 Door.
Boot space comes in at 278 litres for the Hatchback 3 Door, which falls short of the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. Open the tailgate, and it's spacious enough to carry a weekly shop, but if you have a planned golf trip or weekend away, you'll need to fold the rear seats down 60:40.
The cabin of the Hatchback 3 Door is the best in its class, beating the impressive Audi A1 Sportback. There are loads of cool features and buttons dotted around the cabin that look great, and they're all well-built and sturdy. You also get a range of premium features, such as a leather steering wheel and optional leather sports seats.
All versions of the Hatchback 3 Door come with an 8.8-inch circular infotainment system with a DAB radio, smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth, and an onboard computer. If you've gone for the John Cooper Works engine variant, you get a navigation system as standard.
Three trim levels are available for the Hatchback 3 Door: Classic, Sport, and Exclusive.
Classic has 15 or 16-inch wheels, LED headlights, an 8.8-inch colour touch screen, a multifunctional sports leather steering wheel, a piano black interior, satellite grey headlining, MINI driving modes, and a comfort pack.
Sport 17-inch black alloy wheels, John Cooper Works multifunctional walknappa leather steering wheel, dinamica/cloth carbon black, a piano black interior trim, a roof spoiler, adaptive intelligent suspension, cruise control with braking function, and rear park distance control.
Exclusive 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, a silver roof and mirror caps, leather sports seats, exterior MINI Yours badging, and anthracite headlining.
Three petrol engines are available for the Hatchback 3 Door: Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works. All come with front-wheel drive and are available with a manual or automatic transmission (apart from the John Cooper Works, which is available solely with an automatic transmission).
The entry-level version, the Cooper, is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 136hp, does 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds, and returns a fuel economy of 51mpg. A great blend of power and fuel economy, the Cooper is our pick of the bunch. It's great fun to drive and is the perfect engine for a Mini as it's engaging and exciting.
The Cooper S takes things up a notch with a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 178hp, does 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, and returns 48mpg. This engine is more suited towards people who plan on racking up the miles. It deals with cargo very well and is a slightly better cruiser on the motorway.
Exclusive to the Hatchback 3 Door is the John Cooper Works, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit. Coming with 231hp and shooting from 0-62mph in just 6.1 seconds, it returns a go-kart-like performance.
Get behind the wheel of the Hatchback 3 Door, and it'll make you smile from the outset. It's engaging and nippy to drive around town and is fantastic on a country road. If you want to have some fun, the Hatchback 3 Door is the lease car for you.
When driving around town, the Hatchback 3 Door not only looks great but also handles itself brilliantly. It's easy to drive on tight city streets thanks to its compact size and also a breeze to park thanks to the rear parking sensors that come as standard. We'd recommend adding the adaptive intelligent suspension, which deals with potholes with no issues whatsoever.
On the motorway is where the Hatchback 3 Door is most out of its comfort zone. There's noticeable road and wind noise when you get to 70mph, unlike in the Audi A1 Sportback.
On a country road, the Hatchback 3 Door comes into its own. The handling and road grip is brilliant, meaning you can corner at speed and with a smile on your face.
