Few cars are as iconic as the Ford Mustang. The American muscle car has existed in one form or another since the 1960s, becoming an instant hit with buyers worldwide.
The sixth-generation Mustang received an update in 2018 with a Fastback coupe, open-top Convertible and all-electric Mach-E now available as part of the Mustang range.
Rivals to the Ford Mustang Fastback include sporty coupes like the Audi A5 Coupe, BMW 4 Series Coupe, Lexus RC F and Porsche Cayman.
Our Ford Mustang Fastback review covers:
With its sharp lines, galloping horse logo and retro styling touches, the Ford Mustang Fastback is one of the most recognisable cars on the road. Subtle changes in 2018 also helped give the Mustang Fastback a modern edge without losing too much of its heritage.
At the front, the large grille, long bonnet and small light housings emphasise the Mustang's imposing, muscular look. At the rear, the tail-lights with a big GT badge in the middle nod to Mustangs of the past.
Inside, the Mustang Fastback's extended profile means it's reasonably practical for a sports car. Access is easy thanks to the wide-opening doors, and there is plenty of space inside with generous head and legroom. There's also plenty of cabin storage with large door bins, a decent-sized glovebox and a small armrest cubby with a pair of deep cup-holders.
At the rear, the Mustang Fastback has an impressive 408-litre boot with room enough for a pushchair or large suitcase. While access to the boot is tricky due to its narrow boot lid, the back seats fold in a 50:50 configuration, helping to improve space with additional storage under the boot floor.
The Mustang Fastback's cabin boasts plenty of retro features, including a three-spoke steering wheel with a chrome-ringed Mustang logo and circular air vents that throw back to iconic Mustangs of old. The 12.0-inch multi-function digital instrument panel adds a modern touch, but the interior features cheaper plastic finishes, buttons and switches than you'll find in the German rivals such as the Audi A5.
Two trim levels are available, including the GT and Mach 1. All models come with plenty of equipment as standard, including leather upholstery, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, electric front seats, climate control, a heated steering wheel and 19-inch wheels. The V8 model adds a sports exhaust system, beefier brakes and black alloy wheels.
Under the bonnet, the Mustang Fastback engines deliver on power and performance. The 5.0-litre V8 engine is the range's flagship, producing 444bhp and 533Nm of torque to take you from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds.
There's also a 2.3-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost petrol engine on offer for 286bhp. While it's not fast as the V8, it's more economical without sacrificing too much performance. Both engines come with a six-speed manual or ten-speed automatic gearbox.
Out on the road, the Mustang performs admirably, its agile and nimble handing helping to keep body roll in check in tight corners. There are sharper coupes on offer, however, offering a more comfortable ride and a smaller price tag.
