If you're a big fan of the Citroen C4 but wish it had a bit more practicality, then take a look at the Citroen C4 X. A versatile car with a pleasant interior at an affordable price, the C4 X is a solid family car.
Rivals to the Citroen C4 X include the Skoda Kamiq, Mazda CX-30, Kia Niro, and Renault Arkana.
Our Citroen C4 X review covers:
The Citroen C4 X's exterior might look a bit strange at first, but after a while, it starts to grow on you. It's essentially a larger version of the C4 hatchback with a coupe-like roof and sloping boot line.
Inside the C4 X, there's more than enough room for the family. There's plenty of head and legroom in the front for a pair of adults, and two children can easily fit in the rear. Our only criticism is that it's pretty narrow, meaning that adults in the rear might feel a bit cramped on a long journey.
Boot space comes in at 510 litres, which is way bigger than the 380 litres in the standard C4. You can extend the boot thanks to the rear seats splitting 60/40, however, it does have a saloon opening, meaning that loading large items is a bit tricky. If you're after a really impressive boot, we'd recommend the Skoda Octavia or the Volkswagen Golf Estate.
For a budget family car, the interior of the C4 X is pretty impressive. It's designed with a black trim that looks good, and everything you touch feels well-built and high-quality. Yes, there's no denying there are better interiors on the market, but the C4 X won't let you down.
The C4 X has a 10-inch infotainment system high up on the dashboard, making it easy to use while driving. It's a good system that features smartphone connectivity and Bluetooth as standard, but you'll need to upgrade to the Plus trim to get all its gadgets. Elsewhere, you get a 5.5-inch digital driver display behind the steering wheel.
Three trim levels are available for the C4 X: You, Plus, and Max.
You has 18-inch alloy wheels, a 5.5-inch digital driver display, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a grained leather steering wheel, rear parking sensors, emergency braking, and lane-keep assist.
Plus adds automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a reversing camera, and a head-up display.
Max adds keyless entry, cruise control, rear privacy glass, and diamond-cut alloy wheels.
Two petrols and a hybrid make up the engine range for the C4 X. For the petrol engines, both called PureTech, you can choose between a 100hp or 130hp unit. Both are decent either around town or on the motorway, and you'll get a fuel economy around the 50mpg mark.
If you're after a little more oomph, we'd recommend the 130hp version. It goes from 0 to 62mph in 10.3 seconds, compared to the 100hp version's 11.6 seconds.
The range-topper is the hybrid 136, which combines a petrol engine with a small motor and battery. It's our pick of the bunch, returning the best performance of 0 to 62mph in just 8.1 seconds and being great to drive around town.
On the road, the C4 X is what you'd expect from a family car: comfortable, versatile, and safe.
Around town, the C4 X is a good car to drive. Its steering is light and well-weighted and the suspension deals with potholes and bumps in the road very well. The hybrid engine is the standout choice if you'll be driving around town a lot thanks to a quick and smooth acceleration.
If you find yourself on the motorway, the C4 X continues to impress. Its ride quality remains comfortable, and all the engines, especially the 130hp petrol, are suited to long-distance cruising.
Prices for the new Citroen C4 X start from £23,595.00 OTR* or to lease from Price On Request per month.
