The electric vehicle (EV) market is booming, with more choices than ever.
Whether you're a first-time buyer or looking to switch from a traditional car, selecting the right EV manufacturer is crucial.
In this blog, we'll help you navigate through some of the leasing EV manufacturers, including Tesla, Polestar, BYD, and ORA.
NOTE: This blog only includes manufacturers that only produce EVs.
Our blog includes:
Tesla is arguably the most well-known EV manufacturer globally, credited with revolutionising the EV market. Known for their cutting-edge technology, impressive range, and high-performance models, Tesla has set high standards for what consumers expect from EVs.
Pros:
- Long Range - Tesla vehicles are known for their exceptional range, with some models capable of travelling over 300 miles on a single charge.
- Supercharger Network - Tesla has the most extensive Supercharger network, making long-distance travel convenient and thus reducing range anxiety.

Cons:
- Price - Tesla's technology comes at a premium, making it less accessible for budget-conscious buyers.
- Quality Concerns - Some customers have reported issues with Tesla's build quality, especially regarding the interior and dashboard.
Should I Choose a Tesla?
We'd recommend going for a Tesla if you want practicality. Tesla vehicles come with a generous range and can use Tesla's Supercharger network, meaning range anxiety is significantly reduced. They're a great choice for company cars or fleet cars.

- Tesla Model 3 - Saloon car
- Tesla Model S - Saloon car
- Tesla Model X - SUV
- Tesla Model Y - SUV
Polestar is a Swedish EV manufacturer that originated as a performance brand under Volvo. Since then, it's rebranded itself as a standalone EV performance brand that combines luxury Scandinavian design with eco-friendly innovation.
Pros:
- Sustainable Materials - Polestar emphasises sustainability, using recycled and environmentally friendly materials in its vehicles.
- Performance - Known for their sporty handling and acceleration, Polestar vehicles have an engaging and powerful driving experience.
- Safety - With Volvo's reputation for safety, Polestar benefits from a strong focus on safety features and technology.
Cons:
- Range - While competitive, Polestar's range falls slightly short of Tesla's offerings.
- Charging - Charging infrastructure and service network are expanding but not as extensive as Tesla's.
- Expensive - Range-topping Polestars, like the Polestar 4, are very expensive.
Should I Choose a Polestar?
If you like to drive in style and luxury, then Polestar is for you. They come with some of the best interiors and technology on the market, providing a comfortable experience for the driver.
Although Polestar's range falls short of Tesla, it's improving. The Polestar 3 offers up to 372 miles of range, while the Polestar 4 has up to 350 miles.

BYD is a Chinese company that has grown significantly in the global EV market. They offer a wide range of electric vehicles that are affordable, reliable, and practical. In 2022, BYD overtook Tesla as the world's largest EV manufacturer and has a global market share of 9.1%.
Pros:
- Affordability - BYD vehicles are more affordable than their Western counterparts
- Battery Technology - BYD is a leader in battery technology, producing its own batteries, which are among the most efficient and safe in the industry.
- Diverse Lineup - BYD offers a wide range of EVs to suit different needs and preferences. They currently have three cars available in the UK: an SUV, a Hatchback, and a Saloon.
Cons:
- Interior Quality - With BYDs being affordable, their interiors feel less premium when compared to Polestar’s.
- Interesting Design - BYD cars have a unique design, which might not be to everyone's liking.
- Small Dealer Network - There's currently little stock for BYD cars in the UK. However, I'd expect this to drastically increase in the next few years.
Should I Choose a BYD?
There's no doubt that BYD cars are on the up. If you're looking for an affordable and reliable EV, BYD would be a sensible choice. They come at a low price point but also feature a generous range of technology and a good electric range.
Although they are relatively unknown, BYD continues to impress. I expect to see more of BYD in the coming years. So, why not get ahead of the curve?
Models:
- BYD Atto 3 - SUV
- BYD Dolphin - Hatchback
- BYD Seal - Saloon

- Value for Money - ORA vehicles are competitively priced, offering a good range and loads of technology for their price point.
- Unique Design - ORA models like the 03 (formerly the funky cat) stand out with their unique and quirky designs, which appeal to drivers looking for something different.
- Technology - Despite their lower price, ORA cars come equipped with a decent level of technology and connectivity features.
Cons:
- Limited Models - The only ORA model available in the UK is the ORA 03, a small electric hatchback. It's on the small side and doesn't come with much power, achieving 0-62mph in eight seconds.
- Unproven - As a relatively new player in the UK, the long-term reliability and performance of ORA vehicles are yet to be fully established.
Should I Choose an ORA?
If you live in an urban area and are looking to go green, an ORA would be a great choice. They're relatively cheap, packed with technology, and return a generous electric range.
Models:
Choosing the right electric vehicle manufacturer depends on your priorities, whether it's range, sustainability, performance, design, or price.
Tesla offers technology and a comprehensive charging network, while Polestar emphasises design and sustainability.
BYD and ORA provide more affordable options, with BYD leading in battery technology and ORA offering unique designs for budget-conscious drivers.
Each manufacturer has strengths and weaknesses, so consider what matters most to you in your EV journey.
