Roundabouts are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of accidents at intersections.
However, for many drivers, this isn’t the case. Navigating a roundabout can be a source of anxiety and confusion.
To help demystify the process and make our roads a bit safer, here are five essential tips for avoiding trouble at roundabouts.
First things first, ensure you look well ahead and prepare for the roundabout. Check your mirrors so you know what other traffic is around you.
Give signals in plenty of time, and when there’s a break in traffic, fill the gap with conviction.
Approach the roundabout according to which exit you’re taking. Keep to the left to turn left or go straight on, or use the right lane when exiting to the right.
Keep an eye out for any road marking that guides you while ensuring you give other vehicles plenty of space. If you miss a turn or are out of position, don’t rush. Remember, it’s a roundabout, so you’ll get another go.
Maintain a constant speed within the roundabout. Going too fast can lead to loss of control, especially on tight curves, while going too slow can impede traffic flow and increase the risk of collisions.
Once you’re at the correct speed, ensure you’re in the right gear. We’d recommend choosing second or third gear depending on the speed you’re travelling.
Roundabouts can be particularly challenging for cyclists and pedestrians. Always check for cyclists in the roundabout and be prepared for them to change lanes or positions. Give them plenty of space.
If there’s zebra crossing on the roundabout, which can occur in the UK, they have the right of way, so be prepared to stop if necessary.
While roundabouts can seem intimidating at first, following these tips can significantly reduce the likelihood of trouble.
Remember, the fundamental principles of roundabout navigation are understanding the rules, clear communication through signalling, maintaining appropriate speed, and being vigilant of other road users.
