Is there anything worse than being on a long car journey in your lease car and not being able to get comfortable? It's like when you can't get to sleep and then get angry about why you can't (or is that just me).
Long car journeys are a daunting prospect at the best of times, but add into the mix an uncomfortable experience, and you'll probably just get the train.
But the train is no fun; we all want to be on the road! To help you out, our blog explores how to maximise in-car comfort on long journeys, discussing preparation, the correct accessories, and in-car entertainment.
We discuss:
First things first, before you embark on your long journey, make sure your car is in good nick. This will give you peace of mind when on the road and ensure that nothing goes wrong. Here's what we'd recommend:
- Vehicle maintenance - Check all essential components of your car, including oil levels, tyre pressure, and fluid levels. The first step is to read your car's manual, which provides important information about the recommended levels. For more information, check out our blog, A Beginners Guide to Car Maintenance.
- Clean the interior - How can you be comfortable if the car's cabin isn't clean? Wipe the surfaces down, hoover the carpets, and make sure your car smells good.
- Organise the car - Ensure you've got all essentials within reach, such as a phone charger, a drink, and some snacks.
You're probably thinking, how on earth does planning a route maximise in-car comfort? Well, it technically doesn't, but planning out a route beforehand can help contribute to peace of mind on the road.
Ensure the route avoids high-traffic areas and any road works. Think about it: you can't be comfortable driving on a poorly laid road! You can also map out rest stops and scenic routes to add a bit more to the journey.
If you drive an electric vehicle, you'll need to consider charging locations on your route. You should definitely do this beforehand to help reduce range anxiety (and ensure you don't run out of charge in the middle of nowhere). For more information, check out our blog, Overcoming Range Anxiety.
You might not think it, but the correct accessories can make or break a long journey. Take a look at your car and see if there are any areas for improvement (within reason), and think about the passengers in the car with you.
We'd consider:
- Seat cushions
- Steering wheel covers
- Window shades to reduce glare
- Car organisers
- Footrest
- Travel neck pillow (for passengers)
You should also think about what you're wearing. Choose breathable and comfortable clothing, such as joggers, loose jeans, and sweaters. Also, pack blankets, pillows, and personal comfort items (such as teddy bears for little children).
I'd argue this is one of the most important things to get right on a long journey. Ensure that everyone is happy with the mode of in-car entertainment. If everyone is happy and there's a good vibe in the car, there's more of a chance people will be comfortable.
You have a few options. You can craft a music playlist sent down by God himself, put on a podcast, listen to an audiobook, or rely on the radio.
You can also pack a few games for those in the rear. A pack of cards is a great idea and provides so many options.

Another way to ensure a comfortable long journey is by maintaining the ideal in-car temperature and air quality. Settle on common ground for everyone's preferred temperature, and consider using an air purifier to maintain air quality.
If it's a hot day, consider winding the windows down to keep air quality high.
Optimising the seating layout during a long journey will show your passengers that you mean business. Gone are the days of simply abiding by the rules of shotgun; think about all your passengers and where they'll prefer to sit.
Obviously, most will prefer to sit in the front. But if you've got a particularly tall passenger, they'll be more likely to get comfortable in the front. Also, if one of your passengers suffers from motion sickness, they'll also want to be sitting in the front.
Just ensure you keep everyone happy!
Exercise is a great way to remain comfortable on a long journey. If you're sitting down stationary for too long, it's natural that you'll start to get stiff and uncomfortable.
We recommend taking a break every 1 to 2 hours to stretch your legs and raise your heart and blood pressure.
Prioritising in-car comfort on long journeys can transform the travel experience for both the driver and passengers.
By preparing your vehicle, optimising seating, and incorporating good entertainment, you can ensure a pleasant trip for all involved.
Remember, don't overdo it on a long journey. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and drive safely!
